The legend of Fu Xi and Nu Wa

Legend has it that Fu Xi and Nu Wa, brother and sister, once gave a trapped god of thunder some water. He rewarded them with a seed, saying that the end of the world was approaching soon and that the seed could protect them.

Soon after, the god broke loose, and the world started to flood. Nu Wa and Fu Xi remembered what the god had said, so they planted the seed.

The seed sprouted into a Hulu, which in China, represents rebirth and life. Fu Xi and Nu Wa survived the storm by staying in the Hulu, and when the flood subsided, they were the only two people left.

Fu Xi suggested that they should join together to ensure that humanity would not die out, Nu Wa however, was not sure because they were siblings.

Finally, they created a fire and said that if the smoke rose and tangled together, then they would join together. But if the smoke drifted up in different directions, then they would remain separate.

In the end, the smoke rose together, and the two siblings joined together. This legend is why, in many drawings of Fu Xi and Nu Wa, they have snake tails and are joined together.
