The History of Tea

In China, there is a saying that implies tea is one of the most important parts of a person’s daily life. Tea has a long history in China. First appearing in the legend of Sheng Nong as a type of medicine, tea saves the life of the great Sheng Nong after being poisoned by 72 different types of poison. Like in the story, tea was first used as a medicine. It was only until later on that tea became a beverage. Until the Tang dynasty, tea was made with everything people thought were healthy, which included things such as orange peels. Tea would still have been made like that if it wasn’t for Lu Yu. Lu Yu was raised by a monk who liked to drink tea. As a result, he became very knowledgeable about tea. Later on, after he decided he didn’t want to be a monk and ran away, he wrote a book about tea. In his book, he suggested that tea tasted good on its own, and didn’t need all the other ingredients added in it to make it healthy.

There are many different types of tea. In China, the six most dominant types of tea include: white tea, green tea, yellow tea, red tea, oolong tea, and black tea.

White tea. White tea gets its name from the light spots on its leaves. Some beneficial properties of white tea include lowering your risk of cancer and heart disease. White tea has a mild and fresh taste.

Green tea. When green tea is first made, it is a light yellow-ish green color. Green tea is often considered the most healthy of all the different types of tea. While the tea is very healthy, it leans towards a bitter taste.

Yellow tea. At first glance, it will seem almost identical to green tea (if made correctly of course). However, if you look carefully, you will be able to tell the difference. Like other types of tea, yellow tea’s flavor is mild.

Red tea. The name red tea comes from its beautiful ruby red color. Red tea is often used in popular drinks such as iced tea and boba tea. People in the west refer to red tea as black tea.

Oolong tea. Oolong tea got its name from its rich dark brown color. Oolong tea is actually made from the same type of plant as green tea and black tea. It is the process in which they are created that generates different tastes and flavors. Other names for oolong tea include wulong tea and wuyi tea.

Black tea. The color of black tea can range from a vibrant orange to a warm chocolate brown. Black tea is helpful for lowering cholesterol and blood pressure. Did you know, aside from water, black tea is one of the world’s most popular drinks?

Tea is a healthy and calming drink that is consumed everywhere. The making and maker of tea can drastically affect the taste of it. The older the tea is, the better the flavor is. Drinking tea is a yummy way to stay healthy.
